Bachelor thesis – experience report

Cindy R.:
There are about three opportunities to find a bachelor thesis topic. The first one is to get it from a company where a practical training or side job was done before. Here, you still have to find a professor who will supervise it. The second option is to determine an exciting topic on your own and, again, to find a professor who is willing to be the supervisor. Or, third option, one asks various professors and chairs what topics are currently available.

I decided to take the third option. Related to this, I got several proposals. For one topic, I directly got the opportunity to personally discuss it with a potential supervisor, who was able to explain in detail what topic I could chose for my bachelor thesis and why he considers this topic as important. Afterwards I had one week to think it over and, thus, the chance to read first technical literature what helped me to take the decision.

From my point of view, a good supervisor is important when it comes to the bachelor thesis. You need somebody who can support you in case of problems which will definitely occur. My supervisor recommended me to develop a time schedule for my work. This schedule where I indicated when I will have to finish my literature research, the empirical study and the writing of my thesis itself, help me personally a lot.

The writing itself can be quite exhausting which is why one should start it as early as possible. It is particularly here that you will recognize if you have not planned your time well. Unfortunately, I experienced an incident in my family that completely destroyed my planning despite of one week of “buffer time”. I searched for a solution for this problem with my supervisor and, fortunately, we were able to find it. The bachelor thesis reinforced my specialization wish for the master studies.
