Joint Kickoff Meeting of the graduate schools "MuSAMA" and "dIEM oSiRiS"
Understanding Adaptive Multi-Component Systems: Applications in Biology and Ubiquitous ComputingTaking place November 9-10, 2006
University Aula / FhG Rostock
Systems which are able to organize themselves from an ensemble of individual components and that show coherent behavior with respect to the changing demands of an external environment are becoming increasingly important. Biological systems exhibit this capability e.g. during stem cell differentiation or responses of the immune system.
Ubiquitous computing needs this capability in order for the "smart appliances" embedded into the user's environment to provide spontaneous and coherent assistance. Understanding the various strategies that can be used by multi-component systems to provide "self-X" capabilities is therefore an essential part for both research areas. Clearly, there is a highly interesting middle-ground between biology and smart environments.
The two new graduate programs "dIEM oSiRiS" (Integrative Development of Modeling and Simulation Methods for Regenerative Systems) and "MuSAMA" (Multimodal Smart Appliance Ensembles for Mobile Applications) will investigate adaptive multi-component systems from the perspectives of regenerative medicine and smart environments, respectively. With this international kick-off Workshop, we want to emphasize the common ground of these two research areas, in order to initiate a fruitful and synergetic cooperation between the scientific disciplines involved.
